Packing for a Move? Deciding What to Unpack Immediately and What to Store.

packing boxes for a move

One of the most difficult aspects of moving is downsizing and deciding which items to unpack and which to store. Many people feel overwhelmed by the task of going through their belongings – it can be fun, however. This is a great way to find trinkets or lost treasures that you put in a drawer but forgot about.

It is much easier to sort through things before packing them up. Plus, it allows you to pre-sort all of your things before you move so the unpacking process is easier and less stressful. It’s often hard to figure out what you need “immediately” versus at “some point” in the future.

These are some questions you should ask yourself before you start your sorting and packing process to work out what you should unpack immediately and what you should store for later.

When was the last time that you used it?
If the item is something that you use on a regular basis, include it in your to “immediately unpack” group of items. If it’s something you don’t use so often – include it in your “pack and store” pile.

Does it possess sentimental or functional value?
Functional items (aka those that serve a purpose like a blender or a vacuum) and sentimental items are the most important things that you will want in your new home. Include these items in your “immediately unpack” group – everything else can go into your “pack and store” pile.

Where is it going in the new home?
Do you already know where in your new home this item will go? If so, put it in your “immediately unpack” pile – if not, put it in your “pack and store” pile.

Can You Sell It?
If you own a valuable item that you are willing to part with you may want to consider selling it before you pay to move it. Old possessions can help you pay for new items for your new home.
Sorting these items ahead of time, with a clear plan will make your move much easier and will help to reduce the stress of the unpacking process.

Final Tip
If your new home is smaller than your previous and you find that you don’t have enough space for storage, it’s worth considering storing it in a Via-Vault Portable Storage container. They can be stored at your home or at their location, and they will keep your belongings secure and away from the elements.
